How reviews are approached
Gear and equipment featured on Ciss Outdoors is assessed through repeated use over time, rather than controlled testing or first impressions. Reviews focus on how items perform in practice, including context, limitations, and suitability, so readers can judge what may or may not work for them.
A comfortable and thoughtfully designed women’s hardshell that combines a flattering fit with excellent ventilation and practical weather protection.
I’ve been using the Alpine Nation Nimbus Shell Jacket for around four months, mainly for hiking in the Cairngorms. It has been worn on Munros, across more exposed terrain and on lower-level hikes, in everything from warm, changeable days to prolonged drizzle and strong winds.
Spring and summer have provided limited opportunity to test it in sustained heavy rain, so this review reflects the conditions I’ve actually encountered rather than the full extent of the Nimbus’s weather protection. Within those conditions, however, there is very little I can fault.

What You Need To Know
Model: Nimbus Shell Jacket
Size: Small
Time using it: 4 months
Fit notes: Roomy fit, remaining flattering. Ample body & sleeve length
Best for: Hiking, mountaineering, everyday
Key features: 20,000 mm waterproof rating, 3-layer construction, underarm ventilation, helmet-compatible hood, chest pockets
Fit And Comfort
The Nimbus has a generous fit, with plenty of room for layers, but it still feels shaped and flattering rather than boxy. The longer body and sleeves provide good coverage, while the cut allows plenty of freedom of movement.
The body and sleeve length is generous. I am 5′ 11″ and find the jacket provides great coverage. This might be something to consider if you are a shorter person.

What stands out most is the fabric. Despite being a 3-layer hardshell, it feels unusually soft and flexible, making the Nimbus exceptionally comfortable to wear. I’ve happily worn it over just a T-shirt on warmer days without the fabric feeling unpleasant against bare arms.
Weather Protection And Ventilation
The Nimbus has a 20,000 mm waterproof rating, fully taped seams and water-resistant zips. During testing, it has kept me dry through showers and prolonged drizzle, and performs particularly well in windy, exposed conditions.
I haven’t yet worn it through sustained heavy rain, so this review doesn’t assess the full extent of its waterproof performance. Based on the conditions I have experienced, though, I can’t fault it.

The large two-way underarm vents are excellent. They are easy to operate and make a noticeable difference when working hard uphill or when the weather shifts between showers, wind and warmer sunny spells. I often leave the Nimbus on as a general protective layer and adjust the ventilation rather than repeatedly taking it on and off.
Hood Coverage

The helmet-compatible hood is generous, adjusts in both height and width, and moves well with my head without noticeably restricting visibility.
I particularly like how high the collar sits when fully zipped, providing coverage over the chin when the hood is pulled in. The brushed tricot lining keeps this area soft against the face, while the peak provides additional protection from the weather.
Pockets And Practical Details
The two large chest pockets are one of my favourite features. They provide plenty of usable storage and remain accessible with a rucksack on. I generally keep my phone in one.

The Nimbus also has an internal mesh pocket, an adjustable hem, and Velcro cuffs. The Velcro has a particularly firm hold, keeping the cuffs fitted securely where they are adjusted.
Designed For Women
Alpine Nation was founded by Sandra Šuc after struggling to find technical outdoor clothing that performed well while properly accommodating women’s bodies. That focus is evident in the Nimbus.
The roomy yet shaped cut feels particularly well considered, providing space for layers and movement without sacrificing fit. Sizing runs from XS to 4XL, and Alpine Nation also shows the jacket on women with different body types and sizes on its website, which makes judging fit considerably easier.
Build Quality And Durability
After around four months of use, there are no noticeable signs of wear. The fabric, stitching, zips and other details all feel high quality, and nothing about the Nimbus suggests a compromise compared with hardshells from better-known outdoor brands.
Alpine Nation may be less familiar to UK buyers, but in my experience so far, the Nimbus feels entirely at home in the premium hardshell category.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Who It Suits Best
- Women who want a hardshell with room for layering with a flattering fit
- Those who find traditional hardshell construction stiff, and want something softer
- Taller women who usually struggle to find body and sleeve lengths that work
How It Performs
In showers and prolonged drizzle, the Nimbus has provided excellent weather protection, with no issues with water getting through. It also performs well in strong winds, while the soft fabric and generous underarm vents make it particularly comfortable in changeable conditions.
Is It Worth It?
Yes. The quality, fit and finish stand up well against premium hardshells from more established brands, while the women-specific cut and thoughtful detailing help the Nimbus stand out.
