Staying at Willow’s Nordic Shepherds Hut, Ballater
3–4 minutes

If you’re looking for a peaceful, functional base to explore Ballater and the Cairngorms, theWillow’s Nordic Shepherds Hut might just be the perfect spot. I stayed here recently and was surprised by how much this little hut offered. It’s not just about the cosy space, but also the amazing location that allows you to explore the area on foot, without worrying about finding parking.

The Hut’s Layout and Location

The hut is small but efficient, with a modern, Scandinavian-style layout that makes the most of its space. I loved how bright it was inside with plenty of natural light pouring in; it made the space feel bigger than it is. While it would be a bit snug for two people with a lot of gear (it is a small hut, after all), it was perfect for me on my own. And if you’re someone who enjoys the outdoors like I do, it’s great knowing that you can leave the car behind and get straight out into the fresh air, since Ballater’s main square and local shops are only a 10-minute walk away.

Even on a warm weekend, I didn’t need to use the wood burner, but I could imagine how it would make the hut feel even more snug on colder nights. It’s the kind of place you can relax in, without distractions. There’s no TV, just a quiet, peaceful environment that allows you to really switch off.

Perfect for Outdoor Lovers

I’m someone who loves to be outdoors, so having many walks starting right from Ballater village was a huge bonus. I had the chance to try out some routes, including the 7 Bridges and Craigendarroch summit. Both of these walks can be easily accessed on foot from the hut and were highlights. Ballater walking routes are well signed, with information boards and leaflets available that detail the routes, difficulty levels, and estimated times.

What I also really appreciated was how easy it was to walk without the need to drive everywhere. Although I didn’t take advantage of it during my stay, you can hire bikes nearby at Bike Station Ballater, which is great for future trips when I want to explore further afield.

If you’re planning a trip to Ballater, there is a detailed guide to six great local walks, from riverside wanders to short hill routes. And if you’re looking for an overview of the village itself, there’s a weekend guide to Ballater.

The Quiet and Tranquil Surroundings

What I loved most about Willow’s was the tranquillity. It’s located in a peaceful, residential area with very little traffic. There’s a lovely little outdoor seating area where I spent my evenings, soaking up the quiet and the fresh air.

If you enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep, this is definitely the spot. I had some of the best nights’ sleep I’ve had in a while, with the quiet surroundings making it easy to completely switch off.

Practical Info About The Hut

  • Layout: Compact and functional, the hut is ideal for solo travellers or couples. However, it might feel tight with larger suitcases or a pet (especially if the weather’s wet).
  • Kitchen: The kitchen area has a hob, fridge, kettle, and toaster. It’s all you need for simple meals, just know there’s no oven or microwave.
  • Shower: The eco-friendly shower is efficient with good pressure. Even though it’s designed to save water, I found there was plenty for a good, refreshing shower after my walks.
  • outside of a nordic shephards hut with small metal table and chairs out front in a small courtyard style garden

Why I’d Stay Again

It’s ideal if you’re looking to get closer to nature, but still be within walking distance from Ballater’s shops and eateries.
